day ONE

I’m here!

Crazy huh? Today, the 21st of August my fist day in Buenos Aires La Capital de Argentina. No I’m not in Europe. I’m in South America.

So I spent all day on the 20th traveling. My family left St. Mary’s county around 11:30. WE got to BWI around 1:30… However, it turned out our flight was delayed anyways, so we walked around the magazine store and Kali found all the magazines wit Michael Phelps… it was pretty funny…  When I got to the Gate I talked to a little girl named Mikayekaye… she was about 4 1/2  … it took a while for her to tell me her name even. You see I introduced my self first because she just kept pointing to everything on my backpack asking “ is this yours?” “ Where’s ya’ mama?…. Whaddahbout ya daddy?”  it was pretty cute until she started pointing a my hair asking if it were mine…. ;) oh little kids.

The flight to Houston felt long… I think because we’d had that delay…Which was fine because it meant our layover in Houston was a lot shorter. Oh Question: How many of you knew iPODS and iPOD accessories were sold from vending machines… ARE WE REALLY THERE?  I didn’t realize they were the new candy… I dunno I was experiencing a little culture shock in TEXAS. Haha…. It’d be like studying abroad in some ways, the folks behind me on the plane ride down were talking ust loudly enough for me to hear them saying “ at least they were nicer up there [meaning DC] than they usually are, people in the north just aren’t as hospitable” I dunno- I think Southern Hospitality gets cancelled out when they have Giant carts driven by impatient Airport workers  who yell “CARrrrt, Move! ”  so they can transport all the Obese people in from one gate to the next…

Which ,in a moderately related tangent, brings me to an interesting question Julia and I were pondering today as we walked along Avienda Santa Fe, here in Barrio Palermo. ‘Which is worse to kill yourself with cigarettes or through Obesity’ Can Americans really ridicule Europeans for smoking so much when so many of those who are so quick to damn smoking are obese? Are those smoke-stack Europeans damning our ‘Super Big Gulps’ and ‘Triple Decker’ hamburgers?

I’m not sure but those hipster Argentine kids look cool even if they are smoking because they really do have the best shoes.  Its like what fifth graders learn about in D.A.R.E. Except I don’t want to some I want to wear cool  boots !

So my Host mom Susana is pretty awesome- she is a psychologist and very calm. She has a very nice apartment in this trendy neighborhood. I’m very very grateful for the hot water and internet. Julia does not have Internet… it really is a luxury.

I’m really excited about all the possibilities here! We are going to be here for 5 Festivals... one of the is the festival of Tango, One is celebrating Guitars, the others are more Academic and the last one is religious I think.  I’m just hoping our academic don’t get in the way of our learning. I want to learn as much about the place through experience as I can, why read about the place when I could just go???? Right?

Okay well I m super cansada.  I can believe the day has gone so fast…  I’m going to bed & tomorrow I learn to use the Subte ( the B.A. subway/metro).

Wish me luck!
